Questions

Can I start with no martial arts or wrestling experience?

Yes. Most of our members did. New students get extra attention on the fundamentals, at a pace they’re comfortable with.

How is a class structured?

A warm-up, the technique of the day, drills to reinforce it, and in some classes sparring at the end. If you have an injury or limitation, your coach will adjust your training.

Do I have to compete?

No. We encourage everyone to try a tournament at some point to test their skills under pressure, but it’s your call.

How safe is it?

Egos stay at the door and technique comes before winning. Coaches watch every class and stop unsafe behavior, and everyone follows the team rules below. Injuries can happen in any sport, and we work to keep them rare.

What gear do I need, and do I have to buy it from you?

Nothing for your first class. After that, jiu-jitsu needs a gi, and boxing needs gloves, hand wraps and a mouthguard. The gym sells everything you need, but you can buy it anywhere.

How do promotions work?

In jiu-jitsu, rank comes from technique, attendance and helping newer students. Boxing has no rank.

Team rules

We have one rule at Flashback: everyone on this team must be friends.

Honesty and respect are what that friendship is built on. Your coaches will be honest and respectful with you, and we ask the same of you toward your coaches and teammates.

Code of conduct

Coaches and students alike commit to:

  • Put students’ training and safety first.
  • Keep the gym clean and safe.
  • Show self-restraint and look out for others.
  • Apply the rules fairly, without favoritism.
  • Keep personal matters confidential.
  • No illegal activity or drug use.

Hygiene

Mats and equipment are cleaned daily. Keeping yourself clean protects your training partners.

  • Bring a freshly washed gi to every class, not one that’s just air-dried. Wash braces and supports too.
  • Wear a T-shirt or rash guard under your gi.
  • Keep fingernails and toenails trimmed.
  • Take off all jewelry, including rings and earrings.
  • Come with clean hands and fresh breath.
  • Wear sandals or flip-flops off the mat, including to the restroom.
  • Check for cuts and mat burns before and after training, and clean them right away.
  • Keep a towel nearby if you sweat heavily. Wipe up sweat or blood on the mat with a paper towel, then disinfect the spot.
  • Shower as soon as you can after training.
  • Pack sweaty gear separately from clean clothes.

Gear and reading

Gis and equipment are sold at the gym. Online, Combat Corner carries gis and gear.
